Dear Parents and Carers, Staff and Students,
Welcome to the 2024 school year! It is with great pleasure that I welcome all our students, staff and families to McAuley Catholic College, especially our 130 Year 7’s and our new staff. We have had a very pleasing and positive start to the year, with high enrolments in all year groups.
On Wednesday, Years 7, 11 & 12 started their school year and it was an exciting start with Year 7 students and their parents able to gather for a meet and greet opportunity in the courtyard and at Catherine’s Cafe. In our brief Welcome Assembly, we presented each year 7 student with a College badge, and we asked that they wear it with pride. Our Year 11 students have transitioned into senior school and have started straight into their studies. We also welcomed back our Year 12 students who should be ready to continue with their work. We have included some photos from Day 1 in this newsletter.
Years 8, 9 & 10 returned to school on Thursday and there was an excited buzz around the school, with perhaps a little bit of nervousness evident at times. We started Thursday with our first whole school assembly for the year in the hall which was very full with our largest enrolment of the school, reaching over 600 for the first time. At the Assembly, I welcomed everyone to McAuley and outlined my expectations of all students.
The overall Mission of the College continues to be the development of the whole person through spiritual, academic, cultural, physical and wellbeing experiences. This year we continue to focus on High Expectations as well as on building strong relationships, improving student engagement and achieving student academic and personal growth through the continued implementation of the Berry Street Education Model and The Learning Collaborative based on Dr Lyn Sharratt. We have been building a strong wellbeing - pastoral care base to ensure students are ready to engage in learning. Everything we do is under the guidance of Jesus Christ, who is our model, as demonstrated by the Sisters of Mercy and Marist Brothers, whose ethos and charisms form our traditions and history.
WELCOME TO NEW STAFF
We welcome the following staff to McAuley in 2024:
- Mr Nick Littlewood - Business Manager
- Mr Pat Gleeson - TAS
- Mr Ben Ralston - TAS & VET
- Mrs Bec Lane - Teacher Assistant
- Miss Destinee Walker - Indigenous Education Assistant
We will introduce each of these people in more detail over the next few editions of the newsletter.
We welcome back:
- Katrina Don & Tegen Filewood who are returning on a full-time basis
- Returning from leave - Kathy Warby, Sandra Bartholomew, Brayden Jamieson, Siobhan McNamara, Maz Lawrence
On behalf of all members of our College community, I warmly welcome each of these staff members to McAuley in their respective roles and know that they will each make a valued contribution to our College during their time with us.
Important Beginning of the Year Information in this Newsletter
The majority of this Newsletter provides parents & carers with introductory information on staff (Year Coordinators, House Leaders and Homeroom teachers), communication, requirements and procedures. Hopefully, this helps you navigate the start of the year smoothly.
UNIFORM
Unfortunately, this was not the start I was hoping for in terms of the availability of our new uniforms! However, the supply issues are beyond the control of us or our uniform supply company. I am hoping to bring you positive information about the arrival of uniforms very soon. Please see the uniform section in the newsletter for current information.
The College Uniform shop has been operating from the building at the end of the car park. Signage has been ordered. Caroline Sutherland is operating the shop on behalf of P&C Uniforms. I thank you for your patience with the current supply orders.
Year 12 2023 HSC results
Congratulations to our Year 12 students who achieved their HSC at the end of the 2023 school year. We are proud of the achievements of each and every one of our students. There were some outstanding performances that I would like to acknowledge here. Congratulations to Mayha Mead-Davies who achieved our highest ATAR of 97 and will be acknowledged as Dux at our special assembly on Thursday 8 February. I also congratulate Stella van Leest and Levi Vereyken for also achieving an ATAR over 90. Well done to the 11 students who achieved Band 6 results in a variety of subjects. We extend a very special congratulations to Seth Webster who achieved first in the State for Mathematics Standard 1. Many students achieved substantial growth and we have been congratulated on this achievement.
RE Congress in Los Angeles February 2024
I have been fortunate enough to receive a sponsored place at the LA RE Congress. I will be away from the College from 12th to 21st February. I will be sharing this experience with you on my return.
I look forward to working with all parents and guardians throughout 2024 and beyond and I ask for your ongoing support as we work in partnership to make a difference in the lives of our children so they can be the best they can be.

Catherine McAuley
I trust this message finds you well and refreshed after a restful holiday season filled with cherished moments with family and friends. I welcome everyone back to McAuley as we enter the exciting new school year.
ATOMI Learning Platform for Year 7-12 Students
To support the academic development of our students, I want to remind families of the school ATOMI subscription. Designed to cater to the unique needs of our Year 7 -12 students, ATOMI provides an array of evidence-based tools and resources to support the curriculum and study skills. This subscription aims to support our students throughout the year, offering an invaluable academic resource. Be sure to explore its offerings and take advantage of the wealth of knowledge it provides.
Welcoming New Teachers and Students
A special welcome goes out to our new teachers joining us this year. We are thrilled to have you on board and look forward to the contributions you will make to our school community. To all our students, whether you are embarking on your first year at McAuley or entering your final year, welcome back!
The Excitement of a New School Year
As we gathered again as a whole school on Thursday, there was an undeniable buzz of anticipation. The sight of fresh haircuts, broad smiles, and friends gathering was lovely. The beginning of the academic year is exciting as students reconnect with friends and teachers, eager to embark on another year of growth and learning. Whether it's the joy of moving up a grade or the comfort of returning to a place where they feel they truly 'belong,' the energy was palpable.
High Achievers Assembly - Celebrating Success
Looking ahead to next week, we are gearing up for our 'High Achievers' assembly, where we will celebrate the accomplishments of our 2023 dux and the hard work of the entire Year 12 cohort. At this assembly, as we do every year, I will challenge every student to fully 'buy in' to their learning journey this year. I encourage them to commit from the start, engaging actively in their studies and taking ownership of their educational experience in the classroom and at home.
Let's make the 2024 academic year a period of growth, achievement, and memorable moments. I am wishing everyone a successful and fulfilling year ahead!

Wellbeing
I would like to warmly welcome back all our returning students and welcome our Year 7 and new students and their families. The following information is provided to support families in ensuring a smooth transition for their child.
Starting Secondary School - Here we come
Our Pastoral Care Structure
Each year at this time we outline the roles within the Pastoral Structure and the communication process that needs to be followed when making contact with the College.
Roles and Responsibilities Through Pastoral Care
- Homeroom teachers are a very important part of the pastoral structure. The Homeroom Teacher is the teacher primarily responsible for the welfare of each student in his/her Homeroom.
- The Year Coordinator will be responsible for the welfare of the students in their year group. The six Year Coordinators form a pastoral team and will liaise with parents, Homeroom teachers, House Leaders, Leaders of Learning, Classroom teachers and the College Leadership Team.
- The House Leader is the Coordinator of the entire House. They are responsible for building the House Spirit and House system. They work with their House Team which is comprised of the seven Homeroom teachers and other teachers allocated to the House.
Brief Overview of the House System and Homeroom teachers
This is outlined further in the Newsletter
Student Planner
All students are issued with a Planner at the start of each year. The Planner is an important learning item that is to be taken to every class every day. It will be a valuable tool in the Pastoral Care lesson each Thursday and will support the positive education program being delivered. Students are to record all homework, assessments, reminders etc in their planners. It is also used to collect and record Merit Stamps and exits from class (eg toilet, library, office, sick bay).
Students Who Become Ill At School
Students do get sick while at school. We have a sick bay where students can be attended to and monitored. The Office staff regularly contact parents when a child is sick. Any student who is feeling unwell must report to sick bay.
As per our Mobile Phone Policy, students should not use their phones to contact parents during school hours. The students must go to the office where the office staff can contact home. It is difficult when parents arrive at the College Office to collect their child and the Office staff are unaware the student is ill and then have to find the student somewhere in the school. This can be very disruptive for the Office staff. It is appreciated if our policy is followed.
UNIFORM
See the section in this newsletter
COLLEGE EXPECTATIONS
Students and staff expect to work in a safe, secure and supportive environment. The expectations shown below ensure all learning spaces are settled and productive. These expectations work in conjunction with our Mercy values of Respect, Compassion, Justice, Excellence and Hospitality. The expectations are displayed in all classrooms and are clearly stated in the Student Planner.
MOBILE PHONE POLICY
Rationale
Mobile phones and other related devices have become an important part of today’s world and, as such, are seen as common and necessary items that must be incorporated into and managed within the educational domain.
Policy
Students who choose to bring their mobile phone and other related or similar devices to school must adhere to the following procedures. This includes all times students are under the supervision of MCC staff (ie. excursions, camps, and travelling to and from school events). The decision of the Principal on all phones, smart devices and related technology will be final. The Principal reserves the right to allow an individual student to use their device for medical monitoring or other such purposes.
Procedure
- Phones must be turned off upon arrival at school in the morning and may be switched on again after classes at 3.10pm.
- Students are welcome to leave their phone in the office each day or place them on the teacher's desk / or in the phone tub each lesson
- If it is necessary for parents or carers to make contact during school hours this must be done in the usual manner through the School Office.
- Students must not lend their phones to other students during school hours.
- Students can only use their phone with the permission of a teacher, for example when used for educational purposes during a lesson, using eftpos at the canteen and office.
- After 3.10 pm, while being supervised on school grounds, students may use their phone to listen to music, check messages and make calls. However, they cannot take photos or videos.
- Students found using phones during school time without permission will incur the following consequences:
- The phone will be confiscated by the teacher and placed in the office.
- The student’s name is recorded on a phone log in the office
- Students may collect the phone at the end of the day.
- The teacher is to record the incident on Compass
- A warning is issued to the student by the teacher (and Year Co)
- When a phone is confiscated for the second time the above points 1-4 are followed
- A second warning is issued to the student by the teacher and Year Coordinator
- A parent is to be notified by the Year Coordinator or Pastoral Care Coordinator
- The student’s phone is confiscated and placed in the office.
- The student’s name is recorded on the phone log and Compass
- The phone is to be collected by the parent/carer - not the student.
- The parent/carer and student are to attend a meeting with the Year Coordinator and/or Pastoral Care Coordinator and/or Assistant Principal.
- At this meeting consequences and strategies will be put in place to assist the student in the management of their phone. This may include:
- Placement on a stage/monitoring
- Handing the phone to the office each day for a time (determined in the meeting)
- Intervention as needed
- 1st Offence in a term:
- 2nd Offence in a term:
- 3rd Offence in a term:
Mobile phones are valuable items and the responsibility for them rests with the owner. If a student refuses to follow these instructions it will be dealt with by the Pastoral Care Coordinator, Assistant Principal and/or Principal. No responsibility will be accepted by the College for the loss, theft or damage of a phone.
Please note:
- The following is deemed unacceptable use of mobile phones and similar devices - (this list is not exhaustive and therefore not limited to the following):
accessing social media (such as but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and other similar platforms), taking photos and videos, text messaging, phone calls, Facetime or similar, accessing apps, streaming movies, listening to music etc
MUSIC DEVICES/EAR PHONES
These items are not banned from the College. If they are used in class it is only with permission from the teacher. If they are used inappropriately or at the wrong time, the item will be confiscated and placed in the Office for collection by parent/carer as per the Mobile Phone Policy.
BANNED ITEMS
Chewing gum, bubble gum, matches or lighters, cigarettes, e-cigarettes (vapes - vapourisers), alcohol, drugs, knives and other weapons, liquid paper, aerosol cans, fireworks/crackers, water bombs, inappropriate printed and electronic material and other such items as the Principal may determine to be unsafe or nuisance items, are banned from McAuley Catholic College.

LENT and ASH WEDNESDAY
Lent begins next week with Ash Wednesday. It is the season of reflection and preparation before Easter, and its observance culminates in the solemn celebrations of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil which lie at the heart of the Catholic year. In Catholic tradition, Lent is marked by fasting, reflection, giving to others and deepening our sacramental living, especially in Reconciliation.
Parents and families are welcome to attend our Ash Wednesday service in the College Hall beginning at 10.15am on 14th February 2024.

“High Expectations”
From 2023 to 2025, McAuley Catholic College in collaboration with our Parish, families and the broader school community, will strive to provide an environment that promotes and celebrates high standards across all areas of College life. We will do this through a culture of continuous improvement and growth, and belief that all learners can be successful.
Uniform Delay
As previously communicated, there is a delay with the new uniforms due to port strikes. We hope to have uniforms delivered in the near future. In the meantime, to start the school year, the uniform requirements are as follows:
Year 7 and new students -
Year 7 and new students can wear a new McAuley Catholic College Sports shirt (blue & maroon), the "old" white sports uniform (eg from siblings, or a second-hand shop) or primary school sports uniform. If students do not have McAuley shorts they can wear maroon, black or navy sports shorts of an appropriate length.
Year 11
Year 11 students are to wear their maroon skirt or grey shorts as per junior uniform with their Year 10 polo (orders are available at the MCC Uniform shop) or the McAuley sports shirt (old or new)
Years 8-10 & 12
Students are to wear the uniform as of last year (as it is a two-year rollover these students are not required to wear the new uniform yet)
Hats - need to be purchased from the uniform shop located at the end of the car park. Hats are no longer available to purchase through the front office. Year 7 students have been provided with a hat as part of the enrolment pack.
Please Note: All other aspects of the uniform policy are to be followed - shoes, hair, jewellery, tattoos, piercings etc, as per the College Planner and College Handbook.
Uniforms can still be ordered on the website www.mccuniformshop.com.au which will be ready to collect once the uniforms arrive.
We understand this is not ideal and apologise for the inconvenience this may cause; however, this is beyond our control. We hope for the situation to be rectified quickly and will communicate with you as soon as uniforms arrive at the store.
UNIFORM TRANSITION
The transition to the new uniform is a two-year process. By 2026 all students will be wearing the new uniform. New students to the College are required to wear the new uniform. School Bus Travel Pass
Road Safety is a Back-to-School Essential Conversation
As students return to school, it is important to keep safety in mind. Talk with your young person about safely getting to and from school.
- Keep your young person safe by expecting that they will always use the door closest to the kerb to enter and exit a car.
- Keep your young person safe by expecting they will take off their headphones while walking.
- Keep your young person safe by expecting that they will be a positive role model for younger students while travelling to and from school on the bus.
- Keep your young person safe by expecting they will wear a properly fitted bike helmet when travelling using wheels - bike, scooter and skateboard.
- Student drivers must follow government rules, school expectations/ procedures and drive safely and responsibly. This includes only approved passengers being transported in the car with a student driver.
Teach your young person never to sacrifice safety for convenience, source: https://roadsafety.transport.nsw.gov.au/.
Traffic Management
Of an afternoon we ask all parents collecting their child to park safely in the carpark before your child gets in the car. All students leaving must use the pedestrian crossing if you are parked on the western side of the carpark.
Students riding to school must dismount at the gate at the end of the path and walk their bikes into the school grounds, use the pedestrian crossing and store their bikes in the racks provided. Of an afternoon students must again use this process and start riding once they leave school grounds.
Real Talk
All parents can now access a comprehensive online resource created by RealTalk Australia that provides access to a collection of resources to support parents and caregivers in exploring a diverse range of topics including:
- Puberty and personal development and identity
- Online Safety
- Friendships
- Consent and respectful relationships
- Impacts of Pornography.
The online portal provides a range of resources suitable for parents of both primary and secondary school students.
Positive Partnerships
Positive Partnerships is delivering a free, government-funded
"We invite parents, grandparents and fulltime (unpaid) carers of children on the autism spectrum to join us to learn about autism and ways to strengthen home-school partnerships. We often have parents/carers of pre-school aged children attend our workshops, particularly if their child is transitioning to school in the next year or two."
