- How can she or he improve?
- What supports can I provide and can you provide if she or he is struggling? When can we check in again?

Semester 1 Awards at Week 2 Assembly - Thursday 1st August at 11.45am
At our week 2 Assembly, we will acknowledge students in years 7 - 10 who achieved at an outstanding level across the College's Expectations and academically. Parents and carers of students receiving a certificate have been invited to attend this event, and we look forward to having you here for the Assembly and special morning tea. Year 11 will be acknowledged at the Week 4 Assembly due to a clash with the Year 11 retreat.
Assistant Principal Appraisal
In week 8 this term, our 2 Assistant Principals, Kathy Warby and Dianne McGowan, will participate in their 4th year Appraisal. This is an opportunity for Kathy and Dianne to receive feedback on their performance which will help them lead the school into the future. I have included some further information about the appraisal process in this newsletter. I encourage you to participate in the process by providing feedback to the panel in person on the 9th and 10th of September.
Sharing Data - Attendance Matters
As I stated in the last newsletter, I will be providing feedback to parents on the Tell Them From Me survey and other important and interesting data. This week, I will start with Attendance Data. Attendance is an area we would like to see improved. Please see the graphics included further in the newsletter, as attendance matters!
Enrolment offers for Year 7 2025
At the end of last term, we were able to offer over 130 students a place in Year 7 at McAuley Catholic College for 2025. Unfortunately, due to the large number of applications for 2025, we are unable to offer everyone a position. I thank everyone for their patience as we worked through the enrolment process. Acceptances were due on Monday, July 29th, and from here, we will determine if second-round offers can be made.
Trial HSC Exams - Weeks 3 & 4
I wish all our Year 12 students the very best in their Trial HSC exams, which will be conducted over weeks 3 and 4. It is important that Year 12 students use these assessments to help them prepare for their HSC and complete the school assessment process.
Congratulations to Grace Young - Olympian!
I take this opportunity to congratulate former McAuley student Grace Young on her selection into the 2024 Hockeyroos Team to play for Australia in the Paris Olympics! Grace attended McAuley from 2015 - 2017, leaving at the end of year 9 to progress her sporting future in Sydney. We have followed Grace's journey over the years, admiring her determination and dedication, and we wish her all the best in Paris.
Take care in the fortnight ahead

We have sent the 2024 individual student results to families via students and aim to have the electronic version uploaded to Compass early this term.
Year 10 News - Future Pathways
Year 10 students have had the opportunity to consider their study options for the 2026 HSC and have been asked to select possible subjects via a Google form sent by Mrs Lee. The subject lines will soon be allocated, and students will soon be advised of their pattern of study based on what the school can offer. During Week 5, parents can meet with senior staff members to discuss the pattern of study and post-school options for their children. It is expected that prospective year 11 students will also be in attendance. Please note in your calendar that Tuesday 17th August will be the date for these meetings. More information will be emailed to parents in Week 3.
Parent-Teacher-Student Conference (Interviews)
This is a reminder that the conference will be held in the College Hall this Tuesday, July 30th. If you were unable to secure an appointment but would like to speak to your child’s subject teacher, please contact the school to organise a phone conference.
Year 12 Trial Exams
Reminder: The dates for the 2024 Trial HSC Examinations Timetable are: Monday 5 August until Monday 19 August
Assessment Procedures and Policy Apply – please consult the HSC Assessment Handbook 2023-2024 for detailed information.
Supporting Resources:
The NSW Education Standards Authority, in partnership with The Sydney Morning Herald, has released the 2024 HSC Study Guide, which contains everything students need to achieve their HSC exam goals.
Students can find tips to help with their study routine, access the HSC quizzes, and read advice from past students and markers.
The guide also includes advice from mental health and wellbeing experts at ReachOut on how to support students and tailored tips for parents and families on how to support their children in the lead-up to exams.
This year’s HSC Study Guide busts some common misconceptions about the HSC, including how marks are calculated, the disability provisions program, and illness misadventures. It also provides specific information regarding vocational education and training (VET) courses as part of the HSC and advice on finding the right course that fits different career goals.
To access the study guide click here.
Year 12 Extended Study Hours - Tuesday 30th, Wednesday 31st July & Thursday 1st August
Before the Trial HSC, the school will run extended study hours for Year 12 students on Tuesday, July 30th, Wednesday, July 31st, and Thursday, August 1st. The supervision will run from after school until 7 p.m., with a break for dinner, and will be held in the College Library. Thank you to the staff involved in supporting this initiative.
This concentrated time offers an opportunity to form study groups and work together to consolidate learning. The school will provide dinner @ 6 pm for students on Tuesday night (pizza).
Students are not permitted to leave the College to purchase dinner and return to study. Anyone interested needs to attend the Library straight after the last period. If they stay back on nights other than Tuesday, please ensure they have food for these afternoons.
Inspiring Alumni - Hannah Tait, Class of 2022
Last term's week nine assembly featured former student, Hannah Tait, as our guest speaker. Hannah decided to split her HSC at McAuley over two years, 2021 and 2022, to focus on her academic and sporting pursuits. She spoke to the students at the assembly about setting goals and refocusing to move forward.
"Goals are not binding contracts; they are tools that can guide your efforts and give you direction. If you find yourself overwhelmed by expectations, it's time to refocus. Set big goals, but remember to reach out to your support systems when things get tough. Even if the original plan changes, it can still lead you to amazing places." - Hanna Tait 2024
Hannah is in her first year of study, completing a degree in Ecology Conservation in America on a full-ride scholarship (all fees and accommodations covered) at the University of Idaho. She has already broken the indoor 200m record for the University of Idaho. Hannah hopes in 2032 she will make the Australian Olympic team in the Heptathlon. She is also interested in further study once she finishes her current course and is considering obtaining her Master's Degree and possibly a PhD in Ecology.
Alumni Information
We are keen to learn more about our ex-students and what they are up to, so we can occasionally share this with our community via the newsletter or social media.
If you or a family member graduated from McAuley Catholic College and would like to be a part of our Alumni group, please send your details and a photo to our school email grafs@lism.catholic.edu.au. Please also include your full name (and maiden name, if applicable), your contact details, the year that you graduated, an inspirational quote, and 3 or 4 key achievements and the year they occurred.

Policy Review
We are currently reviewing the following policies and procedures:
- Whole School Approach to Pastoral Care Guidelines
- Whole School Approach to Student Management Guidelines (currently our Behaviour Management Policy)
The Middle Leaders, both Pastoral and Curriculum, started reviewing these last term and have had an opportunity to begin analysing the strengths and limitations of current procedures and ways we can move forward to ensure all students are enabled to achieve the fullness of life.
Throughout this term, staff, students, and parents will have an opportunity to have a voice in the development of these guidelines. Throughout Pastoral Care lessons, students will be provided with current guidelines and asked to evaluate and provide suggestions for improvement.
This week, students were asked to review the current Rights and Responsibilities of Students, which are outlined below and listed in their planners. From this, we aim to ensure students have a shared understanding of their rights and responsibilities and are empowered to follow these.
Student Rights and Responsibilities
As a member of the McAuley Catholic College community, I have certain rights and responsibilities. Living these rights and responsibilities will generate an atmosphere helpful to learning and to the well-being of all in our community.
Rights of Students:
- To feel safe at all times in the college environment
- To learn unimpeded by the actions of others
- To express oneself respectfully to others
- To know one’s belongings are safe
- To work in a pleasant learning environment
Responsibility of Students:
- To attend school regularly, on time, ready to learn and take part in College activities
- To aim at the highest personal standards in all aspects of College life
- To cooperate with the staff and to accept the authority and rules of conduct of the College
- To consider and respect the feelings and property of other people, within the College and the wider community
- To care for the grounds, buildings, furniture, equipment and resources provided by the College
Aboriginal Education
Our Aboriginal Education Worker, Wil Bancroft, will be on leave from July 31st to September 5th. During this time, parents and carers are encouraged to contact Angus Field (AEW) [pictured below] or Kathy Warby (AP Mission and Wellbeing) if you or your child have any concerns or require support. Exciting opportunities are being developed this semester for our Aboriginal students, and Wil has documented these in this newsletter.
Our students involved in the Grafton Community of Schools (CoS) Junior Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (JAECG) will attend their next meeting on Friday, August 23rd. This gathering will be On Country, and the students will visit local significant sites. More information will be sent to families in the coming weeks.
National Week of Action Against Bullying
Bullying No Way Week is a national week of action from August 12th to 16th. The theme for 2024 is Everyone Belongs. It acknowledges the important roles school, family, and community play in helping young people feel accepted and respected and that they have a place where they belong. Belonging is like a superpower against bullying; it brings us together, makes us stronger, and helps us understand and support each other.
Throughout this week our students will undertake activities to support belonging and say no to bullying.
The video below highlights the theme for this year:
Family Matters - Guiding Our Children in Their Search for Truth, Meaning, and Purpose
In today's fast-paced and ever-changing world, our children are navigating a landscape filled with endless information, diverse opinions, and constant distractions. The document below provides some reading on this topic. This has been provided through the publication of The Soul published by the Catholic Schools Office.

Assistant Principal - Mission and Wellbeing
Last term saw Year 9 Commerce, Year 10 Commerce and Year 11 Business Studies students participate in the Schools Sharemarket Game.
Students receive a virtual $50,000 they can invest over a 10 week period, in over 300 companies listed on the ASX. The prices students buy and sell at are the same prices as they would get in the live market.
By participating in the simulated game, students were able to
- develop their knowledge of the sharemarket,
- learn how to research companies,
- discover the importance of wise investment decisions,
- gain a greater knowledge of economic and world events, and
- begin to learn more about investing which is beneficial for their future.
The winning syndicate for this round were Jed Rediger and Kane Patricks, representing the Year 9 Commerce class.
Guest speaker Richard addressed the students in the background and the media's misinformation about these vulnerable people's plight. We had a ‘working bee’ to help maintain and clean the centre grounds.
"Street Retreat was a great experience, and I highly recommend it to future year 11’s. Although it was quite a confronting experience, I had an excellent time making new friends and connecting with the Brisbane community. At Street Level, which was a place for people sleeping rough to come and get a hot meal and drink, I had the pleasure of meeting a man called Logan, who told me that he chose to be homeless, which was very interesting to hear. We met a lot of interesting characters, and it really opened my eyes to the different societies and living conditions in the world. Although some situations over the weekend were harsh and unforgiving, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I would definitely go back and do it again if I had the chance."

Visual Art Gallery Excursion
On Wednesday, 24 July, Year 10 and 11 Visual Arts students had the exciting opportunity to visit the newly inaugurated Yarrila Arts and Museum Precinct (YAM) in Coffs Harbour. Situated on Gumbaynggirr Country along the mid-north coast of NSW, YAM officially opened its doors in September 2023. This cultural gem is the centrepiece of Yarrila Place, a modern cultural hub designed by Coffs Harbour's own Matthew Blair of BVN Architecture and thoughtfully built around a 150-year-old Hill’s Weeping Fig (Ficus hillii) in the heart of the Coffs Harbour CBD.
Thirty-six students embarked on this enriching excursion, spending the day immersed in the 2023 HSC Visual Arts Artexpress Exhibition. Guided by the gallery curator and art education officer, our students delved into the nuances of the 20 featured Artexpress artworks. In the serene gallery setting, students engaged with questions pertinent to the Visual Arts Syllabus, fostering the exploration of their own HSC Body of Work ideas.
The curator provided a comprehensive overview of the selection process for the displayed works, highlighting that these pieces were meticulously chosen from thousands showcased at Homebush Stadium. Our students were captivated and participated actively, posing insightful questions during the Q&A session.
Following the Artexpress exhibition, students had the privilege of viewing "Saltwater Freshwater," an exhibition celebrating the work of local Aboriginal artists. The day also included a brief tour of the Coffs Harbour Museum and time to explore the state-of-the-art library facility.
Special thanks to Mr. Ellis and Mrs. Hill for organizing this inspiring day and to Scott Smith for his participation and support during the excursion.
Olympic Fever
Olympic Fever has hit the Mercy Library. I have brought in some of my Olympic paraphernalia that I gathered as a volunteer at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney and I have put them on display for the students to enjoy.
The library is also hosting a series of competitions to encourage the students to increase their reading level. The Year 7 and 8 students can use their current Renaissance reading program to see how many words they can read over the next four weeks. Year 9 and 10 can share their favourite reading moments on a Padlet page and they can find the link on the library homepage. All students can also see if they can win a prize by borrowing the most number of books, at the moment Robert Montford is in the lead.
Prizes include QBD gift vouchers and chocolates for the winning English team (class), of course!
I hope you enjoy seeing the library Olympic ring display that was made with the help of Henry Miller.

Yamba NAIDOC Day
On Wednesday, July 24th, our Indigenous dance group had the privilege of performing at St James Primary School in Yamba as part of their NAIDOC celebrations alongside St Joseph's Maclean.
Following our performance, our students actively participated in various small group activities, assisting the primary school children. These included arts and crafts, bush tucker tasting, Yarning with elders, and outdoor games.
Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and established meaningful connections with students from our foetus schools.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the staff at St Joseph's and St James, particularly Brendan Randall, Susan Frazer, and all the elders who graced the event with their presence and made the day truly memorable.
Special thanks also go to Sarah Nicholls for driving the bus for our students and providing invaluable assistance throughout the day.
Term 3 HEAL Information
This term, HEAL has a range of exciting cultural activities lined up for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. These include:
- Clap stick making
- Caring for our school Bush Tucker garden
- Weaving sessions
- Cultural walks with Elders exploring sacred sites across the three nations of the Clarence Valley
- Arts and Crafts
- Language lessons
- Workshops featuring special guests to teach our students traditional dances
At McAuley, we are committed to honouring the three nations that reside in the Clarence Valley. We recognise the value of connecting with local community members and organisations to enrich the learning experience for our students.
With HEAL, we aim to teach our students outside of the traditional classroom setting and ensure that our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students have ample opportunities to connect with their culture whilst at school.
We recognise and respect the opinions and consent of our local Elders, whom we consult with before planning these cultural activities for our students.
Suggestions from parents and carers are always welcome, as we aim to walk this journey with Mob, for Mob. Please contact Wil Bancroft or Angus Field.
